Beyond Quick Wins: How SEO Teaches Us Perseverance in Creative Ventures
“I’m going to give it a year. That’s my mentality.”

When I heard those words, I felt a sense of freedom about my decision.

Of course, there isn’t anything specifically magical about the number.

Ask the top performers across the world, and they will tell you:

Getting a new venture off the ground and up and running generally takes two to five years.

I’ve heard this repeated, not just in network marketing circles, but also in the coaching and businesses I’ve been a part of since.

It applies to independent creative ventures, too. A long-term mindset is crucial.

Although I will add this:

When you understand that you’re committing to yourself and your growth, not just to your ultimate success, it reframes the journey positively.

The point is, it’s hard to tell whether you’ve got something on your hands that’s worth continuing until you’ve given it two to five years.

Not Your First Rodeo?

The difference is that, if this isn’t your first rodeo, you can get enough of an idea of whether something is worth it in less time, because:

- You already know what to do

- You can repurpose the skills you’ve learned and the experience you’ve gained

- You know you can go at a pace that most people won’t

If you’re putting in the work, within a year, you’ll have a pretty good sense of whether what you’re doing is working.

It’s also considerably less scary than committing to 10 years out of the gate, as important as that can be for certain projects.

What Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Can Teach Us About Accomplishment

And that got me thinking…

When it comes to our independent creative careers, SEO (search engine optimization) helps us see things from the right perspective.

I know that will seem like a weird comparison to some of you, but stick with me here.

I’m sure you LOVE quick wins, am I right?

I do too.

It feels SO good when you get a killer tip, learn about a cool tool, or become aware of an action you can take TODAY that would make a difference in your career.

(Of course, it’s good to be mindful of the fact that the dopamine hit is temporary, and doesn’t always lead to a commitment to continued action…)

The flip side of this, though, is that not EVERYTHING produces fast results.

MOST things don’t.

We should always take note of our wins and celebrate them when they happen…

But we should also be realistic about the fact that, most days, we won’t wake up to find that we’ve won an award, closed a $1 million deal, or gone viral on YouTube.

At any given time, you’re reaping the rewards of the effort you put in months, if not years, ago.

You’re not even seeing the results of the effort you put in today…

Not most of it, anyway.

So, what’s the connection to SEO?

Well, the experts all say the same thing:

It takes 6 to 12 months to work.

Which means this:

You could start producing great content today…

Move to a faster webhost…

Add more information about your products to your website…

(All these things would hypothetically improve your SEO.)

And NOT see a whole lot of change, at least in terms of organic traffic, until 6 to 12 months down the line.

So, what we can glean from this is that:

1) Consistency matters. To ensure steady growth, you need to keep showing up and doing the work, preferably daily.

2) If you don’t think long-term, you will miss #1.

3) Most people would do well to shelve the mental and emotional gymnastics and hit the workbench hard for 6 to 12 months.

Put the blinders on and do those reps…

Because overthinking the roller-coaster ride of statistical ups and downs is sure to distract you from what matters.

What Got Me Thinking About This…

My website traffic has been soaring lately.

Of course, this is good. This is what you want to see.

And it’s clearly a result of the time and effort I put into SEO last year, proving exactly everything I’ve been talking about here.

SEO works when you work it…

And likewise…

Your creative venture works when you work it.

But you must work it. That’s the point.

You must go on faith. You must believe.

Otherwise, you will put in some work and think to yourself:

“What a waste of time. Nobody’s buying my art. Nobody watches my show. Nobody likes me. I should have known better than to try.”

Thinking like that will drown you FAST.

You’ll stop working…

And you’ll miss out on the results.

(This all falls into the category of unnecessary mental and emotional gymnastics, by the way.)

You need to develop perseverance…

AND know when to pivot.

That’s discernment.

But… I DO Have Your Quick Win on a Platter

Blast off,

David

P.S. Getting started generally is the hardest part.

There are so many things to learn.

And it can seem like a drain when you’d rather be focused on your creativity.

But creators who do well today…

Are those who have a balance of ART and MARKETING…

Not just one or the other.

All things being equal…

Those who barely have any art but have marketing skills are going to do better simply by virtue of knowing how to get their work in front of more people.

It may seem like a harsh reality, but…

A lack of marketing skills is what’s holding most creators back.

Fortunately, you don’t need to be good at everything in marketing to see results.

You just need to be good at one or two things, whether it’s sales copy or making personal connections.

You can always get help for the rest.

Fundamentally…

You can elevate your knowledge and skills quickly if you get into the habit of investing in yourself and taking fast action.

Here’s a fast action that will lead to favorable results.
